There is something very moving about an Aboriginal art painting by Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi. Bold and vibrant colors leap from the canvas. Dreaming stories are well-told in designs reflecting her Anmatyerre ancestry and the influence of her famous father, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri.

She was born at Mt. Allan Station in the Australian (Northern Territory) outback in 1967. As the eldest daughter of one of the most famous of Australian Artists, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri (died 2002), Gabriella began to paint at a young age. The influence of her famous father showed in her work, as did the influence of his Aboriginal compatriots at Papunya Tula such as her uncle, Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri, Long Jack Phillipus and Johnny Warrankgula Tjupurula. She occasionally worked with her father on important paintings, for which he achieved worldwide fame. Clifford’s paintings have realized auction prices in the tens of thousands of dollars. One was instrumental in the Australian government’s recognition of Aboriginal land claims.

Gabriella paints the Dreamtime stories of her paternal grandmother, Long Rose Nungala, including Grandmother’s Dreaming, Seven Sisters Dreaming (Milky Way), Bush Tucker Dreaming, Goanna Dreaming and Serpent Dreaming.

Her talent was recognized early, when she was the youngest artist (at 16) to be awarded the Alice Springs Art Prize. At the time, she was a student at Yirara College.

We first met Gabriella in Sydney in the 1990s. After arranging a time and place to meet, she arrived at the door to our motel room. Under one arm were rolls of painted canvas. Led by the other hand was a young boy. Another child, yet to be born, was traveling within her very pronounced pregnancy. We found her to be charming as well as talented, and often recall our meeting with her with great fondness.
