Why not have whiter teeth? “My teeth aren’t terribly yellow, but it really bugs me and I get all self-conscious about my smile” is a common malady faced with people today regarding their stained and yellow teeth. Yellow teeth are unsightly, and there are many reasons why teeth become stained and yellow. Why suffer needlessly with how you look when it is so easily corrected by your dentist? You can have beautiful white teeth so easily that it makes sense to start enjoying your smile today!
Dentin is the calcified underlayment of the tooth that is covered by the enamel. It is inherently yellowish. If your enamel is thin, the yellow dentin might show through prominently, making your teeth appear yellow. After the age of about 15 however, the enamel is sufficiently thick enough in most cases to hide the dentin. After that stage, if your teeth are yellow, it is more likely due to staining…either from the inside or the outside of the tooth.
Your bad and/or yellow teeth may give you signs of something other than just the need to clean or whiten your teeth. The dentist may also see signs of heart disease. A study published in the Journal of Dental Research found that many dental problems can be signs of serious health complications.
Don’t believe the old wives’ solution: “ …just brush real hard with baking soda to get whiter teeth…”. All that does is remove the enamel. Once you remove the protective enamel, you’ll be looking at the underlayer of dentin, which is yellowish. And you can kiss that tooth whitening solution goodbye. You just took the armor off a tank as well, and your teeth will never recover!
Another very bad idea to whiter teeth: a diluted solution of household bleach. Read the label, that stuff might be OK for your socks, but it’s a deadly poison to your teeth and gums. And it’s based on chemicals that can burn your mouth very seriously.
And it doesn’t work very well to whiten teeth, anyway.
The solution to having whiter teeth and a brighter and straighter smile can be completely painless and cheaper than you think!
