How To Write Lyrics – the 4 key steps
REMEMBER: Always base the lyrics around the 4 main elements of a song
1. Verse = Storytelling
The verse is the part of the song where the story is told and this essentially builds the foundations for bridge and the chorus. Try to break down your story or idea into 3-4 different sections and use these as the basis for your verse lyrics.
2. Bridge or Pre-chorus = Conflict
The bridge or prechorus introduces something totally new into the song. It could be a conflict or revelation and is lyrically different to the verses. This is designed to build tension for the chorus (release).
3. Chorus = Your Main Message
The chorus more importantly needs to get across the main message of the song and will be lyrically identical each time it is repeated. It helps if your chorus is as simple as possible as this will increase the likelyhood of people remembering it.
4. Middle 8 = Twist in the Tale
The Middle 8 is where you need to introduce something totally new and will give a song a fresh twist or a boost. Writing lyrics for the middle 8 is usually quite easy as you can take ideas from previous verses or the chorus. I normally try to be even clearer and show a admittence of honesty in this lyrical section.
OK, that is pretty much how to write lyrics for your modern day pop song.
